Ha. A procedure for everything! Thanks for the reference. Yes, not sure whether the loosen the bolt or tighten, but since I’m fully tightened now, I may try to loosen. I pray I don’t loosen too much and release nuts and washers all over creation with the force in the spring!

Eugene, of course there is a procedure. There is a publication for every single thing relating to teletype equipment. Those people were absolutely crazy for publications. Many of the publications can be found here.

https://www.navy-radio.com/manuals-ttycorp.htm

The relevant adjustment procedure can be found in this publication on page 3 -

https://www.navy-radio.com/manuals/tty/573-134-700-6404.pdf

It says......turn the spring adjusting screw until the top doesn't fall down any more...........

Some publications are more helpful that others,,,,,

Just a thought - are you sure you are turning the screw the right way???

Is there an adjustment to keep the top up? I can open it, and it just wants to fall down. I saw a hex-head screw on each side that seems to run through a thick spring, but I could not tighten (clockwise) it anymore (see attached). Maybe I need to loosen it? Or should I be looking somewhere else? What is the trick?

Thanks!
Eugene
