Hi gang:

FWIW, when removing the type bar carriage, refer to B-138 Page 3 for the correct way to deal with the carriage strap, placing the end on the margin bell spring post. Another adjustment that you don't have to do upon reassembly.

Chris,

If you mean "type bars" I removed all mine and scrubbed them with Brillo pads.
Mine may have been an extreme case because they were so corroded from mouse urine.

To get them out do this:
1) Remove the type basket. This requires removing the carrage return strap and flipping a lever.
2) Remove the back stop the bars rest against. It's a horse shoe thingy with a rubber pad for the bars to hit.
3) Remove the do hicky the ribbon runs through.
Once said "do hicky" is out of the way the bars are able to travel forward far enough to come out.

No need to remove that curved rod BUT if you do DO NOT take the set screws all the way out.
If the set screws are mushroomed on the ends taking them all the way out will deform the hole
and then you have problems. Ask me how I know.

See attached.

Long time, no see!

I was wondering if you all have any advice on the best way to clean the typing slugs on a Model 15, both the best way to get at them physically (leave them in place, remove carriage, remove printer unit, etc) and the best cleaning solution to use. For typewriters, it seems to go back and forth between "alcohol, but make sure to use pure alcohol and dry it completely so it doesn't rust" and "mineral spirits but dear God do it outside and don't get it on the paint." I was wondering if the guidance was any different for teletypes, and if anyone here has a novel approach.

Thanks,
