Voip is exactly that, combined with another channel that handles the call, like pickup, hangup, dialing, etc.

They can use compression and usually work over a half dozen different codecs. Theres also error correction involved.

Heres the difference between a fax and a protocol sending text; the fax is a raw bitstream, any noise or problem along the way get translated into noise or blobs on the fax that can disrupt major portions of it. When sending baudot/ascii text, a bit of noise gets translated into a few characters being wrong at worst.

To answer the question, modems over internet have been done and generally work ok-ish up to 9600 baud sometimes. All depends on how good the latency is.

I never understood exactly what VOIP is and is not, but the ITTY signals are broadcast out using audio through the the internet and people receive them just fine. Do VOIP providers do some kind of special compression or something?

Hey friends,

A buddy of mine and me will be setting up an internet relay for my Model 28 KSR (and perhaps the 15 down the line). Besides standard protocols and apps, has any had success with running a signal over VOIP? I have plans to run a computer BBS using similar methods, so I think this would be a cool opportunity.

Thanks,

Mike
