Welcome. These machines are mechanical engineering marvels and great fun to learn about and use.
There are a few publications listed here:

I’d recommend “TTY for the Deaf” as a good practical introduction.

With no signal input, teletype machines “run open”, just continuously cycling a null character. You’ll read about the need for a 60ma current loop circuit so that your keyboard will talk to your printing unit. There are a bunch of people on the list who have hooked up their teletypes to computers too.

Have fun!
Nick

Hello, everyone,

I am pretty much brand new to the use of Teletypes. My experience with the devices is pretty much limited to the operation of a computer terminal in Unix or Linux. I own a slew of Terminals which are easy enough to operate, but I found myself so intrigued with the TTY/RTTY, I jumped head first into a pair of Model 28 and Model 15 units without too much research.

So, I’m looking for places to get started with device operation, and addition, where I might find additional stuff, like an automatic tape reader, etc. I plan to set up a wired relay first, and ham will follow as I don’t currently have a license.

I’m also having issues with my teletype when I turn it on. The gears seem to turn infinitely and I cannot strike a key or get an input, any help with that matter would be great. I think this is the only true source of information on the web anymore.

Thanks, everyone!
Michael
