Look into the M28 "R/T Sets" .... BIG cabinets with two
typing reperfs, each with a 'moving head' LXD TD that read
the tape from the reperf right up to the punch block.
Message comes in to the rcv reperf associated with the
outgoing circuit, which the LXD tape reader keyed to relay
the message.
In my younger days (late 1970s) I designed an entire
worldwide message switching center for PanAm Airlines
which took up an entire floor of the NYC PanAm Building !!
Used stunt box coded switching, and connected all the major
PanAm hubs around the world. About five years later, it was
replaced by computer switching -- no stunt boxes, no relays,
no paper tape. :(
