In the 1970s, a friend bought an IMSAI computer and a punched paper tape
reader. The reader was optical with 9 detectors. The feed hole detector
was a strobe for the data since the hole is smaller than the data holes
and centered on the data. You would just pull the tape through the reader
as fast as you wanted. I always thought the use of the feed hole as a
strobe was very clever.

where the feed holes do not line up with the data holes...
