An interesting thing.
I used to work on the electronics for large hospital pneumatic tube systems.
One system I worked on, had old electronics from 1977 or 1987, 
featuring a 6800 cpu at every tube system station, on a 
serial  wire-or'd comm linkage.  It reported key-presses and 
destination dials, the position of mechanics, and performed 
positioning of mechaniz, to operate the system.
