I think the original question was, how to tell the two magnets apart. I presume by visual inspection, since they also wanted to know how to see if they had a polar relay.

I've heard it claimed that pulling magnets were two side-by-side cylindrical coils and the holding ones were two, smaller, side-by-side somewhat rectangular coils.  Also, from the few I've seen personally, the holding coils were wrapped with some kind of clear plastic-like stuff but the pulling ones I've had were more like a fabric-based tape wrapping.
