THE ATTACHMENT ON THE 28 WAS CALLED A “Call Director,” I think.

Decades ago, I had a chance to buy what was called, I think, a “Call
Director” for my 28KSR. At that time, Metro Detroit had a ‘network’
of people, mostly ham operators, who used TTY for printed communications
, on Ma Bell’s dial-up phone system. I used a Bell 101A data set,
initially, with a modified multi-line phone set.

The Call Director could ‘house’ the 101A for neatness and hiding some
wires and cables.

A few years later I had the chance to get the Call Director to replace the
phone set, so I bought it. Cannot remember who I got it from.

It was simply a ‘cosmetic change’, and provided nothing else.

These were later available with Touch Tone pads.

There were a few rumors that Ma Bell was not happy about this, once it
became known. However, since all participants were using 101A modems,
which obviously met all of Ma Bell’s specs & Standards, us users were
left alone.

This ‘network’ eventually died from lack of use and most of us found a
2M RTTY freq to use. A few RTTY repeaters came and went from lack of
use.

Somewhere, in a file cabinet, I still have several of the lists of these
participants to the phone/RTTY thing. Since they are on tty paper, they
might not be easy to read! Canary yellow paper and whatever inks were used
were not designed for long term storage.

If there are any questions, I may have a few answers. Remember, this
‘network’ got its start in late 1968 or early 1969. That’s over 50
years ago!

For now, 73,

Ralph - W8ROI, GreenKeys “lurker”
