 John,
Yes that is exactly the page I'm looking at and yes 4B is stamped on the part.Guess I was wrong to think space and blank are the same thing. So you think the bell will ring repeatedly if the machine is running open?Might make sense for a news room to alert them the line is down.

Are you looking at a number 4B stamped on a function lever?  According to this chart that would be a Bell on Blank.  Strange, but not as strange as bell on space.  I suspect it's like blank isn't normally used, but can be when they want a bell.  And it would serve as a warning of an open circuit that couldn't be ignored.

I never spent enough time in the newsroom to know for sure, but I know the bell didn't ring on space and I suspect onlyt when AP or UPI or NWS had a reason to get attention.  (Hmm, gets me to wondering, we didn't have any machines at the transmitter site and there were hours that the studio was empty, I guess news only happened between 8AM and 11PM)

  GKs,
My model 15 was owned by Associated Press. I have never had it running yet. (getting close) If I'm reading the documentation correctly the lever for the bell is a 4B which means "bell on space"? Is this thing set up to ring the bell on every space character? A ding for each word?
Seems like that would make for a noisy news room.
