When in high school, I was given a bunch of step equipment donated to my
school by Pacific Telephone. A friend and I built a small step office in
my garage. I still remember the dual coil A relay that would detect off
hook and dial pulses. The B relay, which was slow release, would separate
on hook from dial pulses. I did simple two digit dialing (like the
connector in a switch office as opposed to a selector). I also did not use
a line finder. Instead, each phone had its own connector for dialing out.
I ran wires through trees all over the neighborhood.
More recently, I did mantenance on the demo step switch for the Telecom
History Group in Denver and wrote the documentation on it.
It's amazing what they did with relays!
