Does `stty lcase` do what's needed?
My own setup isn't quite as "raw" because I implemented downcasing in
firmware in my USB driver (
https://github.com/hughpyle/ASR33/blob/master/hardware/README.md). But I
did write some rough notes that might be useful for you,
- customizing the getty (
