We still used some cw back in the mid-sixties when I was an ET. Also subbed
as a RM at times, as they used my ham experience to their advantage! I well
remember standing RATT watches in radio room.
On HF we ran AN/R-390A's into the crypto termiinals then to the Model
28's; On LF we used AN/WRR-3's into the same setup. On occasion I copied FOX
cw from NBA and other stations; 5-letter groups at 26 wpm
Those lazy RM's occasionally asked me to sit on a cw circuit although my
knowledge of "Z" signals was minimal and I did not possess a "speed key"
license. Yes, there WAS such a qualification required to use a
"bug" on a Navy circuit!. Of course as an ET I did not have one!

The US Navy's primary way of sending messages was via HF broadcasts from
shore stations to ships - the Fleet (FOX) Broadcast.
They ran experiments in late 1945 about converting from CW (Morse Code) to
radioteletype.

I didn't realize that around-the-world echo was such an issue - I have heard
"long-path" echoes sometimes but not often. Despite the "not-great"
results from this experiment, they eventually addressed the issues and
converted over to RTTY on HF (and then UHF Satellite).
