I agree with Jeff that the 43 is probably set to half duplex instead of
full duplex. See

I sold a LOT of model 43 printers (RO) for program and transmitter logging
in broadcast stations. The dot matrix printer I had seen before that was
the Extel printer used by wire services to replace Teletype model 15
printers. The 43 has very nice upper and lower case dot matrix printing.
To save money, I made my own RS232 card to put in the back of the 43.
