my local content generating stuff uses the python "newsapi" library,
https://newsapi.org/docs/get-started#top-headlines
which allows you to select from various sources like you mentioned.
The "standard" source selections appear to contain themselves to
strictly factual events rather than straying into editorial content, but
it's also very terse, more like a list of headlines than paragraphs of
content.

for instance, at the moment, with "sources='associated-press":

09/28 13:16 CEO OF HOSPITAL OPERATOR FACING SENATE SCRUTINY WILL
     STEP DOWN FOLLOWING CONTEMPT RESOLUTION

09/27 18:21 HURRICANE HELENE KILLS AT LEAST 44 AND CUTS A SWATH OF
     DESTRUCTION ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST

09/27 13:00 WRAPPING UP MISSION, US TROOPS LEAVING LONGSTANDING
BASES IN IRAQ UNDER NEW DEAL

09/27 09:28 MAGGIE SMITH, SCENE-STEALING ACTOR FAMED FOR HARRY
POTTER AND 'DOWNTON ABBEY,' DIES AT 89

09/26 12:35 HELENE'S WINDS BATTER FLORIDA AS CATEGORY 3 STORM
     RACES TOWARD THE COAST

09/26 11:11 NO. 9 NITTANY LIONS LOOKING TO KEEP MOMENTUM GOING
     AGAINST NO. 19 ILLINOIS

09/26 08:00 10 HOMES HAVE COLLAPSED INTO THE CAROLINA SURF. THEIR
DESTRUCTION WAS DECADES IN THE MAKING
