Important:  Old Teletype print hammers turn to gum.  See the left photo here

DO NOT USE a Teletype with a gummy print hammer, or worse, a hammer with a missing rubber head.  Using it will risk destroying your print cylinder -- it is made of relatively soft aluminum.  Replacement hammers are available.  See the right photo for what your hammer should look like.

In both photos, the ribbon carrier mechanism has been removed to make it easier to see the hammer.
