I like to check speed by checking the bit timing with a scope. For 60 wpm,
the start and data bits should be 22 ms. If you hit an R or Y on the
keyboard and watch the loop (perhaps the voltage on a loop current limit
resistor) with a scope set to single trace, you should be able to see the
22 ms bits.

The range finder is used to center the sampling of the bit in the bit
time. Once you know the printer speed is right, sending continuous data
(RY or quick brown fox or whatever) and adjusting the range finder to find
the min and max settings for good print, then setting the range finder to
the mean of these two values.
