Hello list,
Been lurking here for a while. I am in Norway and recently acquired an
M35B tape typing unit with hope to repurpose it for a sort of an art
project. My experience is with embedded systems development and am an
ok machinist so hopefully I'll get it running. However there are a few
questions I would like to clear up with resident experts.
I only have the typing unit itself: neither the base nor the motor
with reduction gears. My plan is to build the base, paper tape feed
and the drive with a third party vintage motor. The input shaft has a
helical gear, and I see M28 repeforators were driven with a timing
belt instead. Would a simple V- or round belt do here?
What was the reduction rate from the motors to the input shaft? Down
to 100 rpm? 60?
What should the motor be rated for? I see there was a variety of
teletype motors anywhere from 1/12 to 1/25HP but I assume
reperforators were on the lower end?
The unit cycles manually but is tacky. Its printing head is in good
condition if dirty. What is the preferred cleaning method? My first
instinct for getting rid of congealed hydrocarbons is to dunk it into
motor wash oil but I see people use dish soap. A bit concerned for the
shellac-covered electromagnets, should one unmount these prior to
cleaning?
What do you lubricate it with? I have some Aeroshell grease for hefty
parts and some oils, from motor oil down to Moebius. Figure it's light
synthetic oil but nothing especially fancy anywhere?
This is an ASCII machine so supposedly uses 1" tape. Is there any good
source for it other than occasional eBay lots? Should I look for
unoiled tape specifically to print well?
Thanks,
Eugene.
