The only one I am familiar with is RM-number, which means something like
raw material. You would find RM on things like wire and cable and felt
before it was cut to shape for a specific application. We bought wire
and cable from Belden and other suppliers; I think it was only the green
wire wrap wire that we got from WECO. One of my innovations I'm rather
proud of was realizing that big telephone cords, like used on key
telephones, were much more flexible than the kind of cable we bought
from Belden, so I arranged to buy some bulk cordage from WECO for
one of my projects.

There was an amusing telephone call connected with this. I had to find
out which WECO plant manufactured the cordage, and then called them to
see about obtaining it for Teletype. Was told that "we make it but I
don't know if we can sell it to you" by someone who was unaware that
Teletype was a subsidiary of Western Electric. Something similar happened
when some engineers from Teletype went to visit Pacific Telephone and
the door guard didn't want to let them in by virtue of their Teletype
ID cards; he too didn't know Teletype was a Bell System company, and I
guess at the time it was not printed on the ID cards.
