Many years ago I had a tour of the Sylmar terminal of the Pacific
Inter-tie. There was a yard full of switchable capacitors used to
correct power factor. I was out there when some switching was done.
Sounded like an artillery barrage. Some may not know that capacitors
expand and contract during charging or discharging. Where a lot of power
is concerned they can sound like high explosives going off. I was no
more than fifteen feet away. Wow.
You will see correction capacitors on power poles. And I have heard
of power companies offering discounts to customers who could provide
loads suitable for PF correction.
