I'm curious about the difference too. I have a Western Union-badged
Model 32 (with rotary dial) so would be curious about bypassing the
modem on that. I _also_ have a Model 33 (with touch tone pad) with a
giant Western Electric "Dataset" (modem) filling the pedestal but that
one just connects up to a normal POTS line. When I first got it, I
was totally successful dialling up CompuServe and getting a login
prompt at 110 baud.

The 32, though, still needs a clean and lube job since it was rescued
from a garden shed. It also needs the paper tape reader housing
repaired from impact damage prior to it coming into my possession (as
the story goes, the friends of the previous owner got tired of moving
it from house to house and stopped being gentle with it)
