That would be an interesting experiment with a software UART. Lengthen the
mark or space bits by some percentage and see how the printer does. But it
seems like the typical range finder adjustment technique of adjusting to
the mid-point of where copy becomes garbled when using a perfect signal
source would put the range finder at the appropriate point (sample
mid-bit). I imagine there are other adjustments (such as armature travel
distance, spring tensions, how far the armature has to release before the
shaft starts rotating on a start bit, etc.) that would affect the amount
of distortion a printer would accept.
