I'm sure glad you young fellows know how to do DSP and are doing
interesting things with it. I'm too old a geezer to break into that
stuff. I sure was excited when K6STI put out his "RITTY" software,
because it could do some things that I had always wanted to see done
but that would take a lot of work to implement in hardware.
Maybe I'll suggest some experiments that I would like to see done
using DSP.
One of my observations is that ham RTTY is a more difficult challenge
than commercial/military/government (except perhaps military in a
conflict where the enemy is trying to make your communication fail.)
Non-amateur RTTY operations often have strictly assigned frequencies
where only the assignee is supposed to operate. They don't have a
legal power limitation; they use as much power as is necessary to
get the traffic through. They can if necessary devote some acreage
to the antenna farm for double or triple diversity.
Whereas hams have power limited by law and by economics, and in things
like contests and DX there are a lot more people trying to use a
frequency channel that just two, so there is QRM. And usually
a station is fairly restricted in the space available to put up
antennas. So it may be that the best commercial/military modem is
not necessarily the best one to use in ham radio.
