[GreenKeys] BRPE models

My BRPE21 (BRPEB11 base) includes selector magnet suppression switches for zero, six, and seven, thus it should also handle 6- and 7-level tape.  I would expect it to correctly position 7/8” tape for those cases but I haven’t yet determined/verified how it does that on the non-guide edge.  I don’t have any 7/8” tape, so I’ll try hand-cutting a few strips for experimentation/testing once I get the punching action working properly.

 

Note that unlike Figure 10 – Universal Tape Punch Unit in 215B_BRPE_Technical_Manual_May1971.pdf the “CODE LEVEL CONTROL SWITCHES” are held in the left side punch mounting bracket rather than on a separate angle-bracket attached to the front of the punch.  In the technical manual the accompanying description states:

 

UNIVERSAL PUNCH MECHANISM

4.10 The punch units with the universal tape punch (Figure 10) are capable of perforating 11/16-inch tape with 5-level code, or 1 inch tape with 5-, 6-, 7-, or 8-level codes. To accomplish this, a manually operated mechanism is provided to mechanically vary the size of the punch block tape path to accept either 11/16 inch or 1 inch tapes. Associated with this mechanism is a variable tape guide mechanism and three switches which electrically control the 0, 6, and 7 code levels.

 

What would be the utility of punching 6- and 7-level codes in 1” tape, which presumably wouldn’t be readable in 6- or 7-level readers?

 

I’m not sure what is special about the BRPE11 base.  It includes a tape-out switch, but that’s not unusual.
