> 1) The pickup for early models 1-5 were electrical switches, whereas the "new style" (BRPE6 and up) had a magnetic pickup - the parts books, etc. make that distinction.

No, there were 3 pickups to generate the sync pulse at various times:
1 - mechanical -- very early models
2 - magnetic pickup with rigid cable in tube, permanent magnet in pickup and moving iron slug in rim of flywheel
3 - magnetic pickup with flexible cable and permanent magnet in rim of flywheel -- late models

These variations required changes in the drive electronics, so they, like the different punch magnet operating voltages, had to be options the customer could specify when ordering replacement units or parts.

And there were several ypes of cover over the punch itself

1 - with window, without notch for tape-feed lever -- very early models
1 - with window and notch -- early models
2 - without window -- late models

I don't think they made any model number changes for the with and without window covers, and I'm not clear on BRPEs made without a tape feed lever, but I see in the parts list or manuals that these options existed.
