Linux agetty is a mess with teletypes.
What RS232 adapter are you using?
There are a couple troubleshooting options:
1) easiest, turn on incorrect password logging and see what password is
being received
2) bit harder, use a protocol analyzer to see what is happening on the line
7 bit can be an issue, agetty may not support all flags in ubuntu latest,
all kinds of fun issues I have seen.
I generally use socat nowadays instead of real getty with linux. Much
easier to set the options with stty then connect the teletype to bash or
whatever command (telnet) directly.
