I did IT for the DOD for 26 years. They had something called the "Messaging System".It used all caps until 2013!I suspect this was a holdover from the teletype days.Of course teletypes were long gone when I started in the 1990s.It was all computers but the software was horrible antiquated crap!Government off the shelf (AKA GOTS) is the worst crap you have ever seen.Commercial off the shelf (AKA COTS) was lightyears ahead.

I was only thinking about comms stuff in the field or shipboard. But you of course are right about computer systems.
Can’t imagine how long a M33 would last shipboard! M40 and other VDT gear was also installed shipboard in the mid-1980s, but communication was via Baudot.
Was AUTODIN ASCII?

that's interesting!   The major Air Force computer systems (base supply and personnel) were being upgraded by the late 70s' to 33s or VDTs of various types so they jumped past the comm teams.

I don’t think there was any military ASCII until the mid-1990s or later when email began to appear. Certainly, ships in the 1980s were still being outfitted with Model 28 Baudot equipment.

newbie question from a 33 person:   was the military TTY hardware in 1969 (like the stuff here)  still running Baudot or had they switched to ASCII by then?
