DPE is basically a Model 19 keyboard with the signal generating parts
and the K-KT-T switch removed. I speculate it was introduced as a
product to allow retirement of the GPE "Iron Horse" perforator which
was the most ancient Teletype item still in production in the 1950s.
The DPE served as a stopgap until the Model 28 ASR keyboard was developed,
which allowed a Model 28 product line replacement for the keyboard
perforator item.
The G in GPE I speculate came from "Green Code Perfortor" and being a
"green code" machine tells you how ancient it really was.
