You were right! Marc soaked his in simple green but it’s just a snippet l, he didn’t linger on that step. Overnight too, which made me too nervous for the cast iron bits. But he polished everything after too so...
He did say it was something to consider, leaving the selector magnets in or not. It’s the only thing electrical in the printer frame and likely to dry fine. DID NOT soak anything but the printer frame..
I went conservative with a few hours soak and not tearing it down. My printer section was so caked, I took the magnets out…. It was all wax-grease and seized (with old grease) metal…. I soaked mine to get it out of its sarcophagus.
Followed shortly with a rinse, a blast of air compressor, iso alcohol to displace hidden water, and a hairdryer until I was sure it was dry dry dry. Then let it sit in the AZ sun that afternoon to be absolutely certain.
I just rubbed everything over with a shop cloth imbued with CLP break free instead of polishing, lubricated as instructed in the manual before putting it together.
The base and keyboard cleaned right up, no water, with the CLP.
Point being, I scaled the cleanup to the job. If you can go with a brush and alcohol, CLP, WD40 - lucky duck, do that!
Read degreaser bottles, some attack copper and alloys like brass.
