That is all great news Jeff, glad you have joined the RATT crew an I look forward to a QSO with you soon.

Also glad to hear you had a good QSO with Nick on all Navy equipment, it must make for a great story for visitors there.

73,

Ken

Not quite the first time (apparrently someone else did it in..2004) but this was a very different route this time as Im running the convertors and gear in Faccon with seperate send and receive paths as the ship was wired via all the switchboards. That said I was super happy that I was able to transmit today regardless, and now the next time I go in will be to make all the connections permanent and get the ASR in message handling hooked up (I tried today).

Generally this was a "hey do I have everything right" kind of thing and I found a wierd loop issue Ive yet to figure out, but otherwise all the toned out wiring is working as I had hoped!

The ship was packed with visitors as well as the teletype tech was there today so I was stretched thin between people asking questions, working with the tech and constantly remembering to put ropes back up behind me as I run from the shack (Faccon2), to Faccon, to message handling. At this point I really need to coordinate with some extra hands and maybe a walkie talkie.

Onward and upward!

Oh and yes, plan C is to have alternate means to talk ship to ship somehow via internet if it came down to it and I have ideas to make that happen. Ive been talking to landline telegraphy museums that actually do just that (and I know the AWA is linked with them) so the concept works!

HUGE thanks to Nick for jumping on the radio with me and sending test signals while I fiddled with loops trying to not get zapped. I even logged the Qso. We talked for a good 20 minutes via RTTY!

This was the very first time the ship has been on RTTY using original equipment since she was decommissioned in 1991. The gear had all been “de-militarized” with wires cut, circuit boards removed, etc. Jeff and the museum gang have done tons of work to get on the air.

Here’s hoping for a USS Iowa to USS New Jersey QSO before too long.

I was very happy to be their first QSO and was using all vintage Navy equipment in my basement “Naval Communications Station”.

I wonder if they have them all tied together on a communications network shipped to ship museum to museum

Posted a little video of it here It’s pretty awesome to now have another museum ship using vintage gear.
