    Thank you for the link. It was Merrman Smith of UPI who sent the 
first flash and told others to keep off the line.
   I think Smith was the chief correspondent of the UP.
    A flash is a news alert given no more than about once a year. On the 
UPI wire it is preceded by ten bells, on the AP by twelve bells. Its 
only an alert with minimum detail. Followed up by a bulletin with some 
detail. It must have been very frightening to those who heard the bells 
since it meant something disastrous had happened.
    I remember the day, no one who lived through it will ever forget it.
