Out of college, I almost got a job with the terminal division of Data General in Austin (remember their "Darth Vader" terminals?). I told the recruiter in an on-campus interview that I had read "Soul of a New Machine" in high school. The guy was incredulous - he said, "You read that book and you still want to work for us?!?" I did. As a kid I thought the subterfuge and engineers working long hours on complex designs was terribly exciting stuff. I got to go to Austin for a 2nd round of interviews and it seemed like a cool place. They made me an offer, but I took a lower paying one in my home town to stay close to my family and girlfriend at the time... With the way the minicomputer industry died, the job probably wouldn't have lasted too long, but Austin was a hotbed of innovation back then.
Having worked some 60-80 hour weeks on some complex designs during my career, I can say that I got over the "excitement" of that pretty quickly... lol.Hadn't thought of that interview in years.
Keith
