Another Kleinschmidt has been restored to operating condition, and it is a
TT-98D model. It will be used on the weekly MMRCG Saturday RTTY net in
place of my TT-4A. This is about the 10th Kleinschmidt machine of various
models and vintages I have restored. The "D" model was the last, I believe,
mechanical machine Kleinschmidt, by then SCM, manufactured. The date code
is 1967. First, remove the machine from its base, warm up the unit with a
heat gun and spray degreaser to soften and remove all the hard grease and
sticky oil. New power cord and repair the motor governor. Found a spring
laying on the base and had no clue where it came from until we powered it
up, after a complete lube. It went into permanent carriage return so that
narrowed down where the spring came from. It was on the carriage return
latch. Had to order a 12 inch skinny needle nose to reach down in there to
put the spring back on. How that came off is a mystery but glad it was in
the base. New ribbon, strip and paint the cover, set the bias and motor
speed and she's running 100%.
