David,
The Kleinschmidt TT-98 series is a "second generation" to the Teletype
Corp. Model 15/19.
The selector magnet is like a polar relay, in that it has a separate
bias winding. This makes the TT-98 line input polarity sensitive. But
if the machine is running closed, you have the polarity correct. (Does
it run open when the converter is off?)
On the gold box behind the selector magnet there is a mode switch: TEST
/ 60ma / 20 ma. Does the machine run normally in the TEST mode?
On the gold box, there is a place for checking & setting the bias. On
the chassis, near the gold box, there is a 1/16 A fuse, which I think is
for the bias.
Do you have the manuals? They can be downloaded at
https://rattrig.com/manuals/tm's.htm (While you are at
https://rattrig.com, look around the rest of the site to sees how this
equipment was used.)
Starting about 1950, the US Army Signal Corps only bought Kleinschmidt
equipment. I spent 1967 in Viet Nam maintaining them. Now I keep them
running at the Antique Wireless Museum.
Good luck & have fun,
