[GreenKeys] Range Finder Setting/Distortion usage?

I've started to test the ranges for each machine. I am using a fox generator that can also send RYs if I choose. The box is set to 0% distortion. I am using this in hopes to avoid any potential distortion that might be introduced by a TU.
The 28 KSR started having bad copy at 30, however it went all the way through the MAX setting where the knob stops (120?) I continued to have good copy. Does this seem normal?
On the 28 ASR, the knob is not turning at all. Am I supposed to loosen something? Maybe that nut in the center of the knob?

Subject: Range Finder Setting/Distortion usage?
Hi all,
I've noticed that while ITTY produces flawless copy on my two M28 machines, when I copy off the air sometimes one machine prints more accurately than the other even though they are on the same loop with the same TU doing the demodulation. I am thinking this means that one machine's range finder settings might not be as optimally set as the other machine. Which got me to thinking, how can I best set the range finders?
My first reaction was to take one machine, feed it with traffic from ITTY and then adjust the range finder in one direction until copy deteriorates, then move it in the other direction until copy deteriorates. Then set the range finder for the center of those two settings. Let me know if there is a better/more accurate way to do this.
But I also got ta'thinkin' I have a foxbox generator set that has the ability to introduce distortion to the signal (and measure distortion). The box can introduce 0% to 45% distortion and I can choose what kind of distortion I want to introduce STOP PULSE, BIAS (M,S,SW) and END (M,S). I have no documentation for this unit (sperry sr-80) so I am not completely sure what this all means. I can assume M=mark, S=space. But I don't know what SW means or what END mark or END space means.
Regardless, is there a method to adjust the range finder that injecting a loop signal with a particular type and amount of distortion is used? What can the ability to create distortion on a signal do to help me fine tune my setup?
