I never learned to fly, but loved to hang around flight service stations
when there were many of them, all holding Teletype machinery.  They were
nice places at the smaller non-tower airports, where the local pilots
could exchange the latest talk ("Hangar Flying") and hear what was going
on up there.

Nowadays the Air Route Traffic Control Centers have pretty direct
radio contact with everything that is flying and radar contact
with most of it.  But in earlier times, when radio gear was tube-based
there was less enthusiasm about remote radio sites.  The FSSs provided
radio contact with the airplanes and kept the ARTCCs informed as the
planes reported their positions.
