But when you want to switch in a spare machine you don't want to have
to call a techie who knows how to open it up and put in that little metal
clip.  I'm not sure why they used the solenoid and toggle switch, whether
it was thought that remotely controlling the feature might be needed,
or whether it was just a matter of where to put the control and there
was no convenient place on the keyboard base.
