It should not run open with the selector magnet armature held against the
magnet core. I don't know the names of the parts, but when the armature is
held against the core, a "catch" should catch a rotating part when it gets
back to where a character starts. The range finder moves the "catch"
around the shaft to change the position of the shaft starting point when
the selector magnet is released at the beginning of the start bit. On a
model 15, I remember seeing an adjustment screw near the range finder that
appears to determine how far out the armature has to swing before the
shaft is released. So, it MIGHT be this adjustment screw. In any case,
holding the armature to the magnet SHOULD stop the machine from running
open.
