I have a follow-up to this story. The printer is working pretty well
now. The problem ultimately was that one side of the loop was being
grounded. I was trading e-mails with Duncan Brown about this and after
hearing my descriptions of the machine's behavior he suggested there
might be a short somewhere; that either my terminal unit (an IRL
FSK-1000 that I had never actually used) was not working or there was a
problem with my cable. I couldn't think of any reason there could be a
short. I started reading the FSK-1000's manual on the section about the
loop jack. It stated that the connector was a 3-conductor jack with the
sleeve being chassis ground. Then it dawned on me that the connector on
the cable I was using, that I built several years ago, was only a
2-conductor cable. So, that's where the short was. Duncan suggested
that I try the Dovetron TU I have since it has two loop jacks: one
3-conductor and one 2-conductor. Once I used used the 2-conductor jack
then things started falling into place. I may have built the cable for
the Dovetron but it had been several years since I had used it.
The other thing is that the machine has 100wpm gears in it. Last night
I was able to connect it up to ITTY100. It printed mostly fine. I
don't have a permanent Internet connection in the new shack yet but can
get a wi-fi extender to pick up the signal from the house weakly. It
drops out often but it was good enough to establish that the machine
seems to be working pretty well. The 60wpm gears are with the machine
so I will change those in soon.
The Range on the machine is right at 60 and the Armature is now around
45-50. I haven't tried adjusting any of that and this time I think I
will leave well enough alone!
It turned out to be one of those simple issues that was hard to diagnose.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice.
