Haven't seen a Keinschmidt since 1966, but I'll make some guesses anyway.

Wouldn't think a "little" adjustment in speed would have a dramatic effect.

Not having a continuous source or RY is tough.

I suspect some of that lube has worked it's way into the selector
magnet. Take a strip of bond paper (why bond?), insert between armature
and pole piece. Hold armature toward pole piece and slowly pull the
paper back out. It there's oil there you should see it on the paper.
Repeat if necessary to get dry results.
