I'll stir the pot. :-)

Western Union had a school in Crawfordsville, Indiana and I will quote from the booklet.

"Western Union has operated schools for many years to train employees in modern methods of telegraphy"

It goes on to say they need carefully trained and skilled operators.

Looking at the pictures, it was an all female school, with some male and female instructors.

Apparently the school paid for transportation and (reasonable) travel expenses,

The students were also getting student wages "to live comfortably while in Crawfordsville".

They suggested that they stay at "approved" rooming houses that rented between $2.50 to $5.00 a week.
 Probably cheaper that the hotel.
