Good evening fellow enthusiasts.
Quick Intro:
My name is Casey Annis (W3MSG), my QTH is Charlotte, NC. South Charlotte to
be more exact.
Today marks day one as a new teletype owner and I somehow fell head first
into the deep end. I saw that a local seller on Facebook Marketplace had
listed a teletype machine for sale, and since I have a profound love for
almost anything wacky and electromechanical as my wife would say, I took a
chance and made contact.
That, for me at least, turned out to be a pretty good decision. As it
turns out the seller had bought a house at auction where the former owner
had passed away. He bought the house to refurb it and flip it.
During the cleanup process he had found a lot of stuff tucked up in the
basement.
My heart breaks for what he discarded, because from his description, it was
multiple HF radios, rtty scopes, and some encoding cams and spare parts. As
well as multiple sets of multigraph type faces. Ouch..
Yet what he saved to list was pretty outstanding.
I picked up a Teletype Model 28 ASR, a Model 19 (Maybe, it looks like a
19, but is cherry red), a POTS TTY Acoustic Coupler and Manuals. Lots of
new old stock paper rolls, sealed ribbons, punch tape, tape reels.
There was also a clockwork auto take up for the punch tape.
There was a ton of provenance documentation for the former owner. Pictures
of him servicing machines both teletype and multigraph as well as service
records as a communications operator over seas. Training certificates for
multiple programs to service machines as well. All in all I would say this
man knew more about TTY's and Multigraph printing presses than I will ever
learn.
He was a long time employee of Adressograph Multigraph, of which there was
also an example of a machine. Going back for that one, ran out of room in
the truck.
I would say the entire collection is probably museum worthy. Other than
some light cobwebs and dust coating the machines they look to be in pretty
good shape.
I will refrain from powering them on until I can give the power systems a
once or even three times over. Put the scope on the current loop and check
the cams, for mechanical binding.
I also managed to find a decent amount of schematics and documentation
hidden further in the basement. The new owner of the house said he will
call me and let me know if anything pops up as he tries to extricate more
of the items from the basement.
In the meantime, I will be setting these machines up in the garage and
start the process of refurbishing them and organizing the documentation and
accompanying materials to build a better story. I would like to put
together a shadow box for the photographs and other bits.
I will admit, when I went out looking for a teletype, I had originally
started looking for an ASCII setup to use with some of my older computing
experiments. I am still on the prowl for an ASCII machine and hoping for a
Model 33.
These units are destined for my spare 706MKIIG.
The Model 28 ASR has an enamled Bell Labs Badge on the front. The Model
19(??) has the black and brass badges on the front and a toggle switch with
a very satisfying clunk.. 😌
That is all I have for the moment, I will post some pictures tomorrow after
I get them unloaded from the truck. They are resting there tonight under
some clear plastic drop tarps and a heavy oil cloth canvas because we are
maybe expecting some drizzle.
That Model 28 ASR is a heavy beast!
Best Regards and 73's de W3MSG
