On the subject of re-inking a ribbon; A way to use stamp pad ink 
without the problem of smudged printing with a 100% concentration.

Something that might work is to mix stamp pad ink with a solvent to 
dilute the ink, Soak the rolled ribbon
in the mixture, remove and shake, let the solvent evaporate then wipe 
off the top and bottom of the reel.

The ink "should" be more evenly distributed throughout the ribbon at 
the concentration
determined by the ink/solvent ratio.

Haven' tried it but it is a thought,
