[GreenKeys] Why no reels?

Tape reels were used in the military tape relay centers.  For every
outgoing tape reader, there would be a reperf with a take-up reel to
monitor & record what had been sent.

In the manual Torn-Tape relay stations, messages were normally short (a
few feet of tape) and the loose pieces of tape were just walked from the
incoming reperfs to the outgoing tape readers.  See
https://www.shutterstock.com/video/clip-1016529556-circa--1953---women-operate-us-navy's.
And https://www.navy-radio.com/tty-relay.htm. If a message was long,
more than a few feet, then it would be rolled up on the fingers into the
football.

have fun,
