What if I temporarily modified AUTOSTART to add a blank after every figs so Joe could try out his machine? What problems might that cause? If machines have a motor stop on break, wouldn’t that be a problem? What else?

Assuming the risks are low, we could try it. Might there be some way in the transmission where I could sense that Joe wants the FIGS-BLANK and only do it for that transmission? Maybe something in a header?
