Hoopla! It works.
Once I got it all back together, which wasn't easy, I set the reperf at 60
speed and plugged it into my news wire.
It started perforating right away. Once I had about four feet of tape, I
started it into the TD of my old ASR and it printed perfectly. Then I
stopped the reperf and tried to put a ribbon on it. That was an exercise in
frustration for almost 10 minutes. It took a couple feet of tape before the
re-inked ribbon got dark enough to read - and it was even printing
correctly. (First Pic)
Another part of the chinese puzzle is getting all the mounting bolts back
in. If you mount the base first you cannot get to the mounting bolts for
the reperf itself. If you mount the reperf on the base first - it makes it
twice as heavy and that much harder to get into the machine - and then you
can't get to two of the bolts to fasten the base into the dome. That is
where I am now, with only one bolt holding the unit in the machine. I may
be able to get one other bolt in tomorrow. Right now I am too busy patting
myself on the back.
By the way, the missing mounting bolts turned out to be 1/4-20. No problem
- I stock those by the hundreds to work on my riding mowers.
Next step - Mount the typing unit and try to get it to work. I looked at
the gears - 100 speed. I have a 100 speed stand-alone 28 TD. I will have
to bring that out to test the typing unit.
The keyboard perforater actually looks more like just another reperf - it
has a selector on it, but it does not run open the way the dome reperf did
without a loop. (Second Pic) With the switch in "K" position, it does not
perforate from the keyboard either. My junk ASR does not need the typing
unit in it to perforate from the Keyboard - but it is definitely only a
perforater.
While I was out there taking the pictures, I installed the typing unit to
get the keyboard shaft turning. Now, in "K" position, when I press a key
the tape advances one step but I only get sprocket holes. Maybe there is
something wrong with it or maybe there is too much I do not know.
Oh well, one step at a time - have to hook up the selector on the typing
unit next.
