[GreenKeys] Stock ticker operation?

I'm looking at the early history of the printing telegraph (and
https://www.gutenberg.org/files/53481/53481-h/53481-h.htm is great!). For
early type wheel telegraphs like the stock ticker, I can think of a few
ways they might have worked.

1. Like a telephone dial and stepper switch. A series of pulses would be
sent, and the type wheel would step to the appropriate character. When the
pulses stopped (like the interdigit pause on a telephone dial), the
selected character would print, and the print wheel would return to its
home position.

2. Like above, but without the wheel reset. The wheel would just step to
the next character to be printed. But how was synchronization maintained?

Other methods? What was used before the start/stop permutation code we all
know and love?
