I was with the AP at the time.  We had 4 techs covering all of 
Wisconsin, Minnesota north of Duluth and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The speed change was to go from 60 WPM to 66 WPM.  As I recall, the 
switchover went rather well.  We generally had fairly good relationships 
with the engineers at the radio stations (those were required at that 
time) as well as the machinists at newspapers.

And yes, we did wear various types of protective aprons or smocks. The 
slurry, made up of oil + ink + paper dust, that M15s and M20s spat out 
was pretty rough on clothes.
