I had never heard of that before. I can certainly agree that some kids
get really fascinated by watching a Teletype machine at work. I could
guess that the price AP was asking was way too high for a lot of schools,
plus the need for a place to put the noisy machine where the kids could
watch it but not disturb other school activities. Or maybe just the
intensity of the thing - the kid you are trying to persuade to read
has to be right at the machine, and that means only one or two kids
at a time can benefit from the service.
Something I have done a couple of times is to set up a Model 15 driven
by a computer at a museum. When the museum is having a show on some
historical topic, transcribe the old newspaper stories about the topic
to computer files and have the machine printing them out as if they
were the news of the day.
