As I remember it circa 1957 the Turbo Encabulator was a Bell Labs 
development.  The I.R.E. (one of the forerunners of IEEE) had a program 
where they would send lectures by distinguished authors to be shown at 
chapter meetings.  I don't remember now if these were slide shows plus 
audio tape recording, or maybe just audio recordings.  Anyway the 
turbo-encabulator got slipped into the bunch along with all the serious 
technical papers and was shown at my student chapter of I.R.E.  I still 
remember the ending, which said the equipment comes with some number of 
strands of KS-nnnn moral fiber, sort of an inside joke for Bell System 
people.
